NFL Thursday Night: Chicago Bears vs. San Francisco 49ers

Posted by sbblogs on November 12, 2009

The NFL Thursday night schedule kicks off this week with an NFC matchup featuring a pair of teams clinging to post-season hopes. This is “must-win” territory for both the Chicago Bears and the San Francisco 49ers.

The Bears, at 4-4 on the season, have not traveled well as of late. They sport a dismal mark of 2-7 straight up in their last nine road games and also are 2-7 against the spread in those games as well.

The Niners, sitting at 3-5 on the year, have been a profitable play for their backers, boasting an 8-3-2 mark against the spread in their last 13 starts.

Online sportsbook Football Predictions currently have this line pegged at -3 on the home side 49ers. The Over/Under is set at 43.5.

SPORTSBETTING.com is reporting betting action that slightly favors the home side, with San Fran receiving 57% of all the volume that has come in to this point.

The sports betting community hasn’t made their mind up on the Total yet either, as the action is 53% tilted to the “Over”. The favorite and the “Over” isn’t an unusual betting pattern for the “public” when it comes to nationally televised games, but this one is more balanced than usual. Rather than really liking a side, it seems bettors feel they can’t fully trust either team.

Looking at the Total, worth noting is that Chicago has a mark of 9 Overs and 3 Unders the last 12 times they’ve played a team from the NFC West.

When these two meet head-to-head, San Fran has had a clear edge, but keep in mind many of these results were produced with teams that bear little resemblance to the current editions.

Dating back to 1985, Chicago is only 4-10 against the spread 14 contests.

Chicago is also on six-game (0-6) ATS and straight up slump in their last six games visiting San Francisco.

Look for the losing streak to continue on Thursday night, as the Niners running game, led by Frank Gore, and their defense lead them to a home win on this Thursday nighter.

NFL Week 10 Picks – Chicago Bears vs San Francisco 49ers

Posted by sbblogs on November 11, 2009

The San Francisco 49ers host the Chicago Bears, Thursday Nov 12, as the Niners look to avoid dropping five straight. The Bears have won three straight regular season wins over the Niners. NFL oddsmakers at Sportsbetting have the Niners as -3 point home favs over the Bears with the over/under set at 43.5 points . Be sure to get your Chicago Bears vs San Francisco 49ers NFL Week 10 Picks in now at Sportsbetting.

Football Predictions SPORTSBETTING.com is giving Week 10 NFL Picks.

The Bears (4-4) lost to Arizona 21-41 at home in Week 9 and now sit third in the NFC North. QB Jay Cutler made 29 of 47 passes for 369 yards with three TD passes and an interception; overall he’s thrown for 2,046 yards with 14 TD passes and 12 interceptions for an 83.8 passer rating. RB Matt Forte had five carries for 35 yards, while top WR Devin Hester made six catches for 94 yards. TE Greg Olson made five catches for 71 yards with three TD’s. Penalties cost the Bears after they committed nine fouls for 98 yards. The Bears rush defense gave up 182 yards rushing to the Cardinals worst ranked running game in the league. For the second time in three weeks, the Bears gave up 31 points in the first half . The Bears 15th ranked defense will be up against the Niners 27th ranked offense. The Niners are about running the ball and the Bears might have it easy this week if Niners RB Frank Gore sits out. Needless to say the Bears are ranked 21st against the run and continue to slip. As for offense they are ranked 18th overall with an 11th ranked pass game and 28th ranked running game. Their back field will be tested if CB Charles Tillman, Safety’s Kevin Payne and Al Afalava can’t play due to injuries. The Bears average 22.5ppg and give up 23.9ppg, while they are 1-3 SU on the road where they average 16ppg and allow 26.5ppg. They are 4-4 ATS and 4-4 over/under.

The Niners (3-5) lost to Tennessee 27-34 at home in Week 9 and sit second in the NFC West. QB Alex Smith made 29 of 45 passes for 286 yards with two TD passes and two interceptions; overall he’s thrown for 690 yards with six TD passes and five interceptions, in four games, for an 83.3 passer rating. RB Frank Gore had 15 carries for 83 yards with a TD, WR Vernon Davis made 10 catches for 102 yards and WR Jason Hill made four catches for 50 yards with two TD’s. The Niners only converted 3 of 5 trips to the red zone; an extra 14 points would’ve given them the win. RB Frank Gore is probable for Thursday’s game due to a shoulder injury and backup RB Glen Coffee is doubtful due to neck injury. The Niners defense has slipped since their bye week giving up big numbers on yards and points. They are the fourth best squad against the rush, but are struggling against the pass, currently ranked 24th overall. With an injured running game their 22nd ranked pass game must perform well against the Bears 12th ranked pass defense. The Niners average 21.8ppg and give up 21.8ppg, while they are 2-2 SU at home where they average 23.8ppg and allow 22.2ppg. They are 5-2-1 ATS and 4-4 over/under.

Recent Trends to Consider:

* Favorite is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.
* Home team is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.
* Over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.
* 49ers are 3-0-2 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss.
* 49ers are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 vs. NFC.
* Bears are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games.
* Bears are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games as an underdog.

NFL Illustrated Poll – Dirtiest Player “Hines Ward “

Posted by sbblogs on November 6, 2009

Pittsburgh wide receiver Hines Ward has been indicated as NFL’s Dirtiest Player by A Sports Illustrated poll of 296 players.

The poll, conducted in September, represented less than 18 percent of the league’s active players, but at 11.6 percent, Ward, a 12-year veteran, easily outdistanced Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and Miami Dolphins

linebacker Joey Porter, who at 6 percent, shared second place for the dubious honor.

When Denver Broncos Coach Josh McDaniels heard about the poll and told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review Wednesday  ”He’s one of those guys when you say tough, physical football player, his face is probably right there in the dictionary” .

Hines Ward , 33, he was fined $15,000 last October back-to-back weeks for plays that weren’t penalized, and later, broke the jaw of Cincinnati linebacker Keith Rivers during a down-field block that also did not lead to a penalty.

Rivers’ season ended on the play.

The Top 10 Players in the Poll are

1. Cincinnati safety Roy Williams (5.1 percent);

2. Tennessee center Kevin Mawae (4.6);

3. Tennessee cornerback Cortland Finnegan (4.2)

Check out the remaining players at NFL’s Sports Illustrated Poll.

Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers – MMA Picks – Underdog Pick

Posted by sbblogs on November 5, 2009

When I looked for an underdog bet in this week’s “Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers” event I considered two things: The matchup odds and who on the list offers good underdog value, while also having a great shot at pulling off a moderate upset win.

In this week’s event, I pick Jason “Mayhem” Miller. With online sportsbook posting up all the MMA odds early for this event, the current line on this bout has Jake Shields at -260 to win over Miller at +200. I like the value with Miller in this matchup.

Miller is 22-6-0, with only one loss by KO and one by submission. The other four losses went the distance and ended up as decision loses. 13 of 22 wins have come via submission, 4 by KO and 4 by decision. It’s obvious that Miller can go the distance and has only lost two before the final bell.  He’s a 6′1″, 185 lb middleweight. The fight against Jake Shields is for the Strikeforce Middleweight Championship that was recently vacated by former champion Cung Le.  Miller is a great grappler and submission artist. If you need to be reminded how tough Miller is watch the UFC 52 fight against George St. Pierre again. Tough.

Besides Miller’s record and proven skill and tenacity, the fact that Shields is coming up from welterweight does influence my decision to back Miller. Granted, Miller is not a big middleweight, but he is natural at this weight, while Shields is used to fighting at the lighter weight.

I’m mostly giving the edge to Miller for his stand-up in comparison to Shields’ stand-up. While both are great on the ground, and Shields can definitely control and dominate down there, Miller is deep in this area as well. I’m looking to Miller to keep the fight on the feet and stuff Shields if he tries to come in for the takedown. This is where I give Miller his best chance at the upset.

The odds are favouring Shields largely due to his recent impressive victories and his strength on the ground. That said, I feel they’ve overlooked Miller. Sometimes Miller’s style can make people forget about his substance. Miller’s got the tools, talent and experience to stop Shields. Miller is smart, he’s just a character and a real showman.

If Miller sticks to his game plan and looks for the victory, not the battle, I think he can pull it off.  Miller’s proven ability, the fact that I think he’s a smart guy that can figure out Shields, and my belief that he can stop his opponent from taking him to the mat and controlling him is making Miller my dog on this card.

Enjoy the card this weekend.

West Ham vs. Aston Villa – UEFA Europa League– Live Streaming

Posted by sbblogs on November 4, 2009

Today, Nov 4 2009 the match between West Ham and Aston Villa is going to happen and the match time is 19:45

Scott Parker who have banned for one game will return for West Ham in their Barclays Premier League match against Aston Villa.

Hammers captain Parker will take his place in central midfield but fellow anchorman Radoslav Kovac is suspended as a result of his sending-off in the 2-2 draw at Sunderland on Saturday.

Manager Gianfranco Zola has no fresh injury setbacks but Kieron Dyer is still out with a hamstring problem while Dean Ashton (ankle) and Luis Boa Morte (knee) are long-term absentees.

Aston Villa have major injury doubts over midfielders Stiliyan Petrov and James Milner.

Petrov suffered a shin injury and Milner picked up a calf problem during Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Everton at Goodison Park.

Manager Martin O’Neill rates both as doubtful while midfielder Craig Gardner is unavailable due to a groin injury. Nigel Reo-Coker and Fabian Delph could deputise if Petrov and Milner miss out.

The Team Stat Comparison is as follows.

West Ham United      Aston Villa
Matches Played         10                                  10
Table Position             19                                 7
Points                              7                                  18

West Ham United played 10 Matches and Aston Villa also played 10 Matches. The points for West Ham United are 7 and for Aston Villa are 18.

We have to wait and see which one beat the other in Today’s Match.

Monday Night Football Picks: Falcons Vs Saints

Posted by sbblogs on November 3, 2009

Divisional matchups have been the order so far this season on Monday Night Football and this week the Atlanta Falcons are in New Orleans to close off the Week 8 NFL betting card. It’s the first meeting of the season for these two NFC South rivals who split the series in 2008 with the home side winning each contest straight-up and against the spread.

The undefeated Saints (6-0) are one of only two remaining team in the league with a perfect record after the Denver Broncos lost on Sunday in Baltimore (Indianapolis (7-0) is also perfect after an 18-14 win vs. San Francisco). You can check all of Sunday’s scores and recaps at ESPN.com

For the sports betting community, if you are looking at betting on an undefeated team this late in the season, it means you’re going to be laying points, probably a lot of them. That is the case in this matchup, as the online sportsbooks pegged the Saints as double-digit favourites.

The Saints have been attracting a lot of the betting action throughout the week, as the line has moved all the way up to -12. Online sportsbook reported 78% of all the betting volume on the Monday nighter had come in on New Orleans as of late Sunday night.

NFL Trends: Road favorites in Week 7 were 7-0 SU/ATS including the Patriots at Tampa Bay, even though it was neutral site game, and it wasn’t by small margins that the chalk teams were winning or covering, either. San Diego, Indianapolis, Green Bay and the New York Jets won by a combined margin of 132 points – that’s 30.5 points per game!

Results this Sunday (Week 8) by big home favorites like the Colts and Chargers, who both won straight-up but failed to cover the big spreads, did little to sway bettors away from New Orleans and it could have something to do with the Saints performance last week in Miami.

Trailing 24-3, the Saints offense went to work while the defense stymied the Wildcat and New Orleans made a statement. Starting with a QB Drew Brees rushing TD in the final seconds of the first-half, New Orleans went on a 43-3 run lasting 28 minutes to cement the win and become the first NFL team in history to score 45-plus points in four of their first six games.

Atlanta was in Dallas last week and learned what an explosive offense can do when the Cowboys put up 37 points – the most points the Falcons have allowed in the Mike Smith-Matt Ryan era. Recent success, or lack thereof, by double-digit favorites on Monday Night has done little to sway the tide of bettors from New Orleans, but since Week 6, 2006 there have been 10 double-digit favorites and they are just 2-8 ATS.

This is the seventh divisional Monday Night game of the 2009 season and favorites through the first six games are 4-2 SU but only 2-4 ATS. All six games have gone “Over” the posted total and in fact the only Monday Night game this season that did not land on the high side was Carolina at Dallas in Week 3.

The posted total for Atlanta-New Orleans is one of the highest bettors will see in the NFL but if the Saints keep scoring the way they have been, it could be a sign of things to come.

NFL Picks: Looking at the matchup, I’m going to be taking the big points and hoping the Falcons can keep this one close. Good luck with your bets on the big game.

Week 9 NFL Power Rankings and Schedule

Posted by sbblogs on November 2, 2009

The top 10 power ranking is subject to change as the Monday Night Football game between the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons. The Philadelphia Eagles jump into the top 10.

The Eagles jump into the top 10 after a flogging of the New York Giants, 40-17. They are as good as any team in the NFC when they are on their game. With games like Oakland, their inconsistency is a doubt. The Philadlephia Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys next week in a game that will give either team the NFC East lead.

The Ravens enter the top 10 at No.9. Albeit 4-3, the Baltimore Ravens have played some fine competition.. They defeated the previously undefeated Denver Broncos 30-7 in week 8, regaining the respect of NFL fans. Can they ride the momentum?

It will not get any easier for the Ravens next week as they play Cincinnati Bengals. Indianapolis Colts remain in top spot as they stay undefeated in a 18-14 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. The Indianapolis Colts will be tested by the visiting Houston Texans in the next game. To read more on the rankings go to sportsbetting.com. And for the next NFL schedules go to nfl.com.
